Privacy Policy

Overview

Foliar is an offline-first, private plant care app. Everything you add is stored locally on your device in an SQLite database. There is no account, no sign-up, and the app works fully offline. Your plants, photos and notes are never sent to us. The one time anything about you reaches the developer is when you fill in the feedback form and press send, which is described below.

Data You Provide

All of the following is stored only on your device:

• Plants you add: names, species, rooms, and notes
• Care schedules, care history, and health log entries
• Photos you take or choose for your plants
• App preferences: theme, language, and notification settings

What We Do Not Do

• No Foliar account or sign-up of any kind
• No analytics, crash reporting, or usage tracking. We do not know how often you open the app or what is in it
• Your plant data is never sold, shared, or sent to us. The only information that reaches the developer is feedback you fill in and send
• No internet connection required for anything in the core app

Foliar does show banner ads, and it does have optional features that go online when you choose to use them. Those are described in the Advertising, Backups and Feedback sections rather than promised away here.

Advertising

Foliar shows a small banner ad on some screens: Home, your plant list, Settings, and a plant's own screen. There are no full-screen ads, no video ads and no reward prompts, and no ads at all while you are being asked to do something, including onboarding, the photo viewer and the care calendar.

The ads come from Google AdMob. When an ad is requested, Google receives device-level information that it defines and we do not control: an advertising identifier, approximate location derived from your IP address, and technical details such as device model and operating system version.

Google never receives anything from inside Foliar. Not your plants, your photos, your care history, your journal, your reminders or your API key. The ad library is never given any of it.

Ads are non-personalised by default, everywhere, including regions where personalised ads would be permitted. Non-personalised means the request is not used to build an advertising profile of you. It does not mean nothing is sent. Where the law requires consent you are asked before any ad is requested, and you can change your answer at any time in Settings under Ad privacy choices.

Device Permissions

Foliar asks for permissions only when a feature needs them:

Notifications: to remind you when a plant is due for care. Reminders are scheduled locally on your device; no server is involved. You can decline or disable this at any time.

Camera and photo library: only when you choose to add a photo of a plant. Photos are copied into the app's local storage and are never uploaded anywhere.

Alarms & reminders (Android): so care reminders can fire at the time you chose. This permission is optional; without it, reminders may arrive with a short delay.

Backups and Exports

A file you export. You can write your data to a ZIP file from within the app. It is created on your device and goes only where you send it. It is deliberately not encrypted, so treat it like any personal document.

Google Drive, on Android. Foliar can copy the same data to your own Google Drive account. It goes into a private application folder: a space only Foliar can open. It does not appear among your files in Drive, and the developer cannot read it, list it, or see that it exists. The app requests a single Google permission, drive.appdata, which reaches that folder and nothing else in your Drive. Your account email is stored on the device so the app can show which account backups go to; no password or token is kept.

Automatic backup is off until you switch it on. When on, it runs at most once a day as you open the app, waits for wifi before sending photos so it cannot quietly use a mobile data allowance, and never shows a sign-in prompt: if the connection to your account has lapsed it stops and tries another day. Disconnecting revokes the permission, leaves existing backups in your Drive untouched, and deletes nothing from your phone.

Restoring merges a backup into what is already on the device and never deletes anything. Your AI key is in neither kind of backup.

Feedback You Send

Foliar occasionally asks a few short questions about how it is going, and Settings has a way to write in. If you answer and press send, that is the one time Foliar sends anything about you to the developer, and it happens only because you filled something in.

Sent with your answers: the app version, the operating system and its version, and your language. Never sent: your plants, photos, journal, care history, notes, or your AI key. Your device model is not collected. An email address is included only if you type one, and only so you can be replied to.

The questions can be postponed, or dismissed permanently with "Don't ask again". The "Send feedback" entry in Settings transmits nothing at all: it opens your own mail app, and your mail client sends the message.

Data Retention and Deletion

Because all data is on your device, you are in full control:

• Delete individual plants, photos, or entries at any time
• Use Settings → Clear Data to erase everything the app stores
• Uninstalling the app removes all of its data from your device

We cannot delete your data for you, and we cannot recover it, because we never have it.

Children's Privacy

Foliar does not collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Future Changes

The optional features this section used to describe as hypothetical have since shipped and are documented above: banner ads, the AI assistant that uses your own provider key, Google Drive backup, and the feedback form. If a future version changes these practices again, this policy will be updated before those features ship and the changes will be clearly described. The core promise does not change: your plant data stays on your device and is never sold or shared.
